Rovine di Turris Libisonis
The ancient city of Turris Libisonis is located within the archaeological park of the city of Porto Torres, in the north-west of the city, which stands on the Roman remains of the ancient Iulia colony of Turris Libisonis. Founded in 46 BC by Julius Caesar, returning to Rome from Africa, for the celebration of the triumph after the battle of Tapso, he chose it, it seems, so that the Roman ships in the passage between Corsica and Sardinia during storms, could find refuge along the coasts , in the center of the Gulf of Asinara, in northern Sardinia, next to the mouth of the Mannu river. Excavations in the archaeological area have brought to light thermal facilities, in particular the Central Baths dating back to the end of the third century AD. and called Palazzo di Re Barbaro, a name attributable, according to tradition, to the governor who sentenced the martyr Gavino to death, public buildings, villas, residential and productive districts that can now be visited together with the annexed National Museum "Antiquarium Turritanum", divided into two floors , with sweeping views over the remains of the Roman city.
