Description

The Island of La Maddalena is located in the north east of Sardinia. It is the largest island of the archipelago made up of sixty islands and islets, although the main ones are: Spargi, Budelli, Santa Maria, Razzoli, Caprera and of course La Maddalena. Precisely in the latter lies the very pretty town, where the first urban settlements date back to the late 1700s, is a typical fishing village surrounded by a rugged and rocky coast, with a perimeter of 45 kilo meters dotted with Mediterranean scrub. Its coves and beaches are enchanting, usually small in size, with not particularly fine white sand, and a crystalline sea, with incredible colors ranging from blue to turquoise, richly populated with marine fauna. The position of this island has always been considered strategic because it could assume an important logistical base in the Mediterranean chessboard, so much so that in 1793 the French general Napoleon Bonaparte tried to invade it but was stopped by the Maddalena Domenico Millelire. For a long time it was the base of the Navy in fact since 1972, by virtue of the agreements between the Italian State and the United States of America, it allowed a landing to the transits of submarines in service in the Mediterranean as well as the establishment on land of administrative offices, schools and housing for the military and their families. The base was dismantled in 2008. The island of La Maddalena can be reached starting from the port of Palau after about twenty minutes of navigation.
