The island of Serpentara is small and wild, rich in nature, located four kilo meters south-east of Sardinia, has an area of one hundred and thirty-four hectares and is uninhabited. It belongs to the municipality of Villasimius and is part of the protected marine area of Capo Carbonara. The name derives from the shape of the east coast which resembles a snake. On the highest point of the island is the tower of San Luigi, used during the Spanish domination for the sighting of the Saracen ships that infested the coasts. In the northern part there are large rocks called "Varaglioni" which form spectacular natural pools in the sea in which to dive. To the south, on the other hand, granite masses of yellow, gray and pink shaped by the wind stand out. Navigation and fishing are regulated by the marine protected area. The island can be reached by private boats or organized excursions from the port of Villasimius.
