The Isola dello Sgombro or Isolotto dell’Ogliastra is located in central eastern Sardinia in front of the beach of Lotzorai. It extends for about ten hectares and consists of a real islet with two large outcropping rocks detached from the main body. On the top of the larger one is the statue of the "Madonna of Ogliastra", the work of the artist Pinuccio Sciola, the destination in July of an evocative pilgrimage to celebrate the Madonna queen of peace. Legend has it that on this porphyritic granite island a treasure was hidden by Saracen pirates, probably fueled by the fact that ancient Arab coins and a box with a manuscript were found. Surely frequented by the Phoenician-Punic era, as evidenced by the discovery of some fragments of pottery dating back to the fourth century BC, it has always been a shelter for sailors in fact on the island there are delightful coves and related beaches destination for boaters and lovers snorkeling and diving.
