The Island of Sant’Antioco, is located on the southwestern coast of Sardinia and is the largest in the Sulcis Archipelago. Unlike the nearby island of San Pietro, reachable only by sea, it is connected to the Sardinian coast by an artificial isthmus and a bridge that facilitate communications by land. There are only two inhabited centers on this 110 square meter island: Sant’Antioco and Calasetta. In the summer season it is a popular tourist destination that can offer the visitor, as well as enchanting beaches, museums and archaeological sites including the Phoenician tophet, the basilica of Sant'Antioco (patron saint of Sardinia), nuraghi, domus de janas, sacred wells and a Punic necropolis. The Museo del Bisso is interesting, dedicated to the treatment of this natural material produced by the castanet and from whose processing precious fabrics were made, according to a practice handed down by the Phoenicians, mostly intended for ecclesiastics. It is an island of volcanic origin mainly rocky and jagged interspersed with coves and sandy beaches, especially in the northern part. The sea that bathes it is appreciated for being limpid and crystalline. The hinterland is characterized by a luxuriant Mediterranean scrub that helps to give a wild aspect to this suggestive area where it is possible to enjoy a holiday of relaxation and contact with nature in an environment that offers bathing areas whose peculiarities, sometimes clearly contrasting, they can satisfy all needs.
