Cattedrale di San Nicola

Description

The beautiful and spectacular Cathedral of San Nicola, set in the historic center of Sassari in Piazza Duomo, shows how extraordinary human ingenuity and art can create. The construction of the church dates back to the 12th century, being mentioned in a monastic document, but in reality it stands on an early Christian building, the remains of which are visible under the apse. The church was rebuilt in the 13th century in Romanesque-Pisan style and between 1435 and 1518 the church was renovated in Gothic-Catalan style, following the transfer of the bishop's chair from Porto Torres to Sassari. In the seventeenth century the current façade was built, in Baroque style, with three niches housing the statues of the Turritan martyrs: Proto, Gavino and Gianuario. In the center, the niche with San Nicola, patron saint of the city of Sassari. A section of the wall on which the bell tower was built remains from the Romanesque phase. The hemispherical dome and the gargoyles also characterize the exterior of the Cathedral, but the most striking element is the main facade of the temple, in Baroque style, rich in decorations, more than thirty meters high, the most imposing in Sardinia.
