Description

The island of Tavolara is located in north-eastern Sardinia and characterizes with its imposing beauty, given by 565 meters high and one kilo meter wide, the panorama of the coast that goes from Golfo Aranci city to San Teodoro city. This granite island has hills, vegetation and beaches and is accessible from both ends: to the west from Spalmatore di Terra where there are the few settlements, a landing place and the most beautiful beaches, from the east from Punta Timone which houses the NATO base as well as a maritime beacon. The island is part of the AMP (marine protected area), established in 1997, and with an extension of 15,000 hectares it covers extraordinary inlets, coves, beaches and laps this large stretch of coast with its crystalline waters. It is said that Tavolara is the smallest kingdom in the world due to the fact that in 1836 the King of Sardinia, Carlo Alberto, when he landed on what was then an unknown island, met Giuseppe Bertoleoni and gave him the noble title then handed down to the heirs. Naturally many think it is a legend because it seems there are no tangible traces of this investiture. The island is also known for the annual event, in the period between June and July, of the Tavolara Festival. It is a week dedicated to Cinema in which actors, directors and famous celebrities of the show are hosted on the occasion of the screenings of the films presented in a truly exclusive environmental context. It is possible to reach the Island of Tavolara, after about thirty minutes of navigation, with the boats, for guided excursions, which depart daily from Porto San Paolo, or you can rent different types of boats from various points of the coast.
